Uhrenfabrik Lenzkirch or Lenzkirch Clocks was founded in 1851 in the village of Lenzkirch in Baden by Eduard Hauser who had trained in France and Switzerland. Hauser, the son of a teacher, was born on 21 August 1825 and gained experience of making music boxes with Johann George Schopperle. During this same period he gained a knowledge of metalworking, precision work and the design of musical instruments, as well as a proficiency in the composing of music.

The firm acquired a reputation for building particularly fine regulators. Up to the 1920s it still produced regulators with compensated pendulums and precision movements. The firm was later taken over by Junghans and the factory closed down in 1932, at which period the market for wall regulators had collapsed.

Antique French Mystery Clock by A.R.Guilmet,

3591

Antique French Mystery Clock by A.R.Guilmet, Circa 1875.

Guilmet, Paris, the movement stamped with his trademark 'GLT' and numbered 355

The variegated veined marble case has ring carrying handles to either side and rests on gilded feet. There are brass moulds between the body and the base with a further brass mould around the top.

The figure is a most attractive one of a female holding the glass pendulum, standing on a circular socle.

The gilded roman numerals are incised into the 4 inch stone dial with the centre of the dial being left open revealing Guilmet's ingenious escapement on the numbered movement’s front plate.

The 8-day movement has outside countwheel striking on a bell.

Guilmet took out the patents for his mystery clocks in 1867, 1872 & 1874. Their fascination lies in the fact that there is no apparent connection between the pendulum and the movement and that the statue and may be lifted off the clock and has no connection to it.

The way in which this clock works is explained and illustrated in Mystery, Novelty & Fantasy Clocks by Derek Roberts pages 241-252 with this particular clock being shown in Fig 21-4 on page 248
