Small Mahogany Antique Regency Longcase Clock

Only 76 inches high / 6 foot 4 inches / 193 cm
 
White 12" painted convex dial sgd. A. Mitchell, Glasgow.
The dial retains its original paintwork.
 
The mahogany clock case and movement made in London and brought to Glasgow for A. Mitchell II perhaps as a special order or as stock for his Glasgow shops.
 
The bell striking 8-day movement # 1176 unsigned but most likely by Thwaites & Reed, (London, 1808 - 1840) with anchor escapement, 5 Pillars and strike / silent lever over XII
The weights are the original brass cased London type as is the heavy pendulum bob; it is on a wood rod with a rating nut.

The Mitchell clock making family of Glasgow;
Alexander Mitchell II. Admitted as freeman 1822.  Eldest son of William Mitchell (Mitchell & Russell 1803-41) and grandson of Alexander Mitchell I. Gorbals, Glasgow 1798.
 
Alexander took over his fathers business which was subsequently absorbed by John & William Mitchell (1833) who advertised as having premises in Glasgow & London.

A Small Antique Satinwood Cased 4 Glass Mantel Clock. John & W. Mitchell, London & Glasgow. Circa 1840. Signed silvered dial with Roman numerals. Finely veneered satinwood case with bevelled glasses to sides and top. 8-Day timepiece, fusee movement with anchor escapement. John & William Mitchell, were established as clock and watchmakers at 80 Argyll St. Glasgow from 1835
 
The Thwaites business was founded in London by Aynsworth Thwaites in about 1760 and traded as Aynsworth & John Thwaites when father and son were in partnership. John Thwaites traded under his own name from circa 1780 until 1817 when he took his wife’s nephew, George Jeremiah Reed, into partnership. The Thwaites and Reed business continued into the late 20th century

Top quality mahogany case profusely inlaid with boxwood lines, foliage and flowers in urns and fluted vases, dyed green swags, shell patera and grotesques. The hood flanked by Corinthian columns, the waist door by Corinthian fluted quadrants.

7 Inch gilt brass dial with silvered chapter ring, subsidiary chime / silent ring, engraved centre, scrolling foliage and flower head decorative spandrels and Arabic, Art Noveau numerals, signed Le Roy & Fils, 57 New Bond St., London.

Three train quarter striking fusee movement with maintaining power and long pendulum, striking Westminster chimes on a rack of four gongs and the hour on a further large gong.

Given that these clocks are normally twice this size this miniature is an unusual and rather rare clock. We have had the full size version of these clocks often in the past but have never seen one this small.

Clock case and movement made in London for Le Roy, (the retailer) for their New Bond St, premises.

Antique Scottish pine cased long case clock with automata ship and rare alarm function.


Simon Forrest, Kirkfieldbank. Circa 1820


13 Inch painted dial with famous Scots in the spandrels, Ramsey, Burns, Scott and Campbell.
The arch painted with a coastal scene and with a rocking ship moving in the centre.
Dial with Roman numerals, 2 subsiduary dials for date and seconds, brass hands and a third central hand for setting the alarm.


8-Day movement striking the hours on a bell, the alarm mechanism built within the movements plates, ringing on a second bell.


The case made of Scottish pine, with swan neck pediment, reeded columns to the hood and the trunk, standing on bracket feet.


Simon Forrest is recorded as working in Kirkfieldbank, Lanarkshire from 1800-1837
We had one of this maker’s, clocks in for repair some time ago, it had the same alarm mechanism in it.

Painted dial with Roman and Arabic numerals decorated with fans in the 4 spandrels and with flowers and thistles in the arch.

The mahogany case is a deep colour, having its original finish, the hood with swan neck pediment and turned pillers with its original glass having nice flaws in it. The trunk with a long door over a plain base and standing on bracket feet.

8-Day weight driven movement striking the hours on a bell with cast iron weights, brass bob pendulum and original steel crank winder.

Painted dial with Roman numerals and brass hands, painted with a coastal scene in the arch depicting a small harbour, a lighthouse and a beached fishing boat, the spandrels with country cottages and garden scenes.

 

Nice quality mahogany case of nice deep and original colour with swan neck pediment and turned columns, the trunk with convex door and side pillars over a panelled base and standing on bracket feet.
 

 

8-Day weight driven movement striking the hours on a bell, retaining its original, flat cast iron weights, decorated pendulum with painted thistle and crank steel winding key.
