In nice original condition and in working order.
The 'flat-to-the-wall' barometer does away with a bulky cistern set behind the base of the instrument. The result is a barometer that has a more elegant appearance on the wall. The Cary family were major scientific instrument makers in the late 18th and early 19th century. As well as barometers, they made and sold all manner of related instruments such as microscopes, globes, theodolites, sextants, and drawing instruments.
William Cary born 1759 died 1825.
He was a famous maker of barometers and other scientific instruments, the younger brother of John Cary the cartographer and a pupil of Jesse Ramsden. His business was at 272 Strand in 1786 moving to 181 Strand in 1794 till 1825. His two nephews retained the name of ‘William Cary’ when they took over the business upon his death in 1825.
